Muskroot Resin (Sumbul)

Sumbul, also known as Muskroot Resin, is oleo-gum-resin harvested from incised thick rhizomes of Ferula moschata (Reinsch) Koso-Pol. (syn. Ferula sumbul) of Apiaceae. Native to rocky slopes of Central Asia, Afghanistan and Xinjiang of China, it is a rare Ferula material and historic botanical musk substitute. Listed as China Class II protected wild plant, wild resources are under strict control, and commercial supplies are mostly sourced from regulated harvest in Central Asia. Unlike typical fetid asafoetida, it barely has pungent garlic-sulfur odor and bears soft musk character. Widely used as a fixative in vintage perfumery since the 19th century and applied in traditional Central Asian nervine herbal remedies. Presently it is used for natural fragrance and antique scent extraction with limited supply, frequently adulterated with other Ferula resins.
